I took a look to my left, where my bookshelves live, and saw my many boxes of ideas books and magazines, all adorned with brightly colored flags popping out of the tops. I grabbed one at random and opened to the first flag. I made 2 cards using that design. I flipped to the next design I had flagged. 2 more cards were created. The next flag hit my hot button. Several cards were created, thanks to Mary Jane Johnson in the Sept. 2009 edition of Cards magazine. Sometimes you need a little inspiration.
I wanted something fun and playful - not a solid color. A couple weeks ago I found a "rag" rug at Menards for $1.99. The colors were perfect and so was the price!

Here is my kitchen floor.

Here is the rug I wanted to replace.
Here is the rug I found at Menards. Cute, right?

For some reason I decided to double check that it was machine washable. HOLD. THE. PHONE. The tag says: "Spot Clean Only. Avoid placing this product on light colored surfaces as the color may transfer. Dry immediately if wet. Exert cautions when using on wooden, vinyl or tiled surfaces." WHAT??????

I've decided that the only SAFE place to display my new rug is on the grass in my yard. Or maybe I should use it as "art" and hang it on the wall!Kidlibhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17513700554886387790noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5381920469339160660.post-23333226655936840072012-03-18T19:49:00.000-05:002012-03-18T19:49:10.571-05:00The Toaster OvenI finally broke down and bought a toaster oven. Never thought I needed one. Until I got this job. And there's one there. And now I need one. Who knew that bringing in one small-ish kitchen appliance could cause such a chain of events.

Let me begin by saying I don't have much counter space and what little I do have, was already occupied.

The toaster oven had to live next to the stove - it's the only space big enough. So then I had to move the bowl of snacks/cat treats (we are an equal opportunity snacking family), and measuring cups and super=cool vintage tiered metal shelf.

There is an old ice box in our kitchen that held chips and drink mixes on the bottom and cookbooks on the top. Now the bottom holds liquor bottles and the top holds bags of chips.

The only available counter left, having relocated the liquor bottles, is to the right of the refrigerator. It's narrow. I tried putting the cookbooks in an old wire freezer basket in the space, but that seemed like a waste of space. I mean, let's be honest, how often do I need a cookbook? (giggle*snort!)

So, instead, I moved the drink mixes - currently in a tacky plastic box - and the bowl of people/kitty treats, to that space. It's not a good look.

In the meantime, I wandered around the house looking for a suitable place to put the cookbooks. Not too far away, yet not necessarily in the kitchen. Hmmmmmm, there was a misused shelf in one of the built-ins in the office. Perfect. After removing and relocating the assorted computer papers, outdated adaptors and floppy discs (again - giggle*snort), I found a home for my cookbooks.

Perfect. Except that now I have this small mountain of unfiled-torn-from-a-magazine-copied-from-a-book-printed-off-the-internet pile of recipes to sort through. It's Recipe Reality Check time. Here is the criteria: Sure it looks/sounds good, but will I really make it? Are there 2 columns of ingrediants? Does it require a bunch of spices?

I'm off to sort.

Someday I will cook something in my toaster oven. Maybe I'll find a recipe.....Kidlibhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17513700554886387790noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5381920469339160660.post-39403586662178792492012-03-02T21:47:00.000-06:002012-03-02T21:47:12.776-06:00Have You Ever...............As I'm sitting here this evening, pondering what to write about on my blog, the idea snuck into my subconscience and settled there, making periodic jabs at me until I recognized it. This is a situation I've been in many times and I always marvel at it.

My husband was in the dining room watching some old western movie. I'm in the office. The rooms are on the same floor, but not visible to each other. I find myself listening to the music playing in the background of the movie. It's easier to do when you can't see the pictures. Before the electronic world evolved, producers used music to capture the "mood" of a scene. Old movies are filled with elaboratly composed songs - some even with words - and fabulous symphonic pieces. The notes roar or creep into the background, only to sneak away, unnoticed, when the acting takes center stage. Imagine being a studio musician and being given a movie score to perform. How disjointed and odd it must have been to perform without knowing the context of the scene where it would be used. How much music and song wound up on the cutting room floor. What talented musicians went unrecognized for their unbelievable performances in so many movies.

The next time there's an older movie on, listen to what's going on in the background, without watching the screne.

On another note - no pun intended - Alfred Hitchcock's movie, The Birds, was the only movie (ever?) of his to be filmed without the use of background music. If you've seen it, I'm willing to bet that you never noticed. The lack of background noise in many of the scenes adds to the movie's overall eerieness. Once I learned this information, the next time I watched the movie I felt it was even more powerful, and the filming even more "deliberate". Super creepy.

Honestly, I'm not a movie watcher, so this commentary/observation is rather ironic coming from me. What do you think?Kidlibhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17513700554886387790noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5381920469339160660.post-8642253839568254202012-02-12T21:54:00.000-06:002012-02-12T21:54:50.747-06:00Motorcycle MotivationTwo posts in one day! You're thrilled, right? Unfortunately, neither of them have much for content. Just random thoughts.

Originally I started to exercise at the Rec Center because it was suggested by my employers. I don't mean that in a bad way. I should say, we are both exercising. The buddy system. And believe me --- I NEED to exercise! Then I remembered that I have a class reunion the first weekend in August. While knowing that I will never in a zillion years get back to the 95lbs. I weighed when I graduated, I could use to lose a few pounds.

Another point for motivation is that I want new jeans.

And then, this weekend, I bought a new Harley shirt. Motorcycle riding season comes long before the reunion. I'd love to look a little tighter and toner for biking season.

So, there you have it. Time to get SERIOUS about this weight loss! Anybody care to join me??Kidlibhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17513700554886387790noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5381920469339160660.post-56346719493688088492012-02-12T21:47:00.000-06:002012-02-12T21:47:10.244-06:00Valentine'sSooooooo, I've been making valentine cards. i think I ended up with a dozen, in two different designs. No two exactly alike. And I put them in envelopes, sealed them, and addressed them.

And then I remembered that I hadn't taken any pictures. Grrrrr..........Kidlibhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17513700554886387790noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5381920469339160660.post-62864418599385228672012-02-09T21:29:00.000-06:002012-02-09T21:29:41.247-06:00The People We MeetMy new job has introduced me to a new cast of characters. Most of them are men, simply because that's the nature of the business. In just a few short months, some have left a lasting impression, others just a memory.

I met a man who took a car to the Barrett Jackson car auction.
I met a man who dyed his hair orange because he knows he's not going to live much longer.
I met a man who was in the military and served in Germany. For many months he patroled on snow skis. He was a sniper.
I met a man who makes homemade ice cream. With the help of his wife, they create amazing flavors - and never use a recipe. It's rich and creamy and not like any homemade ice cream I've ever had.
I met a man who holds international titles in extreme fighting.
I met a man who gardens. He gave me a HUGE bag of jalepenos.
I met a woman who's heart is so big that she sends packages and cards to people she's thinking about nearly every day.
I met a woman who's learning about Jesus, for the first time.
I met a man who lived in his car in order to pay child support.
I met a man who has an uncanny resemblance to my dad. (My dad passed away in 1999.)
I met a man who is watching his father die.
I met a man who has full custody of his 4 children.
I met a man who makes delicious salsa. He makes enough to share.
I met a man who's speaking voice melts my heart.
I met a couple who still hold hands and drive themselves to the doctor. They've been married for 60+ years.

How lucky am I to have met these people. Some of them have shared their stories with me and some have not. I look forward to each and every one walking through the door.Kidlibhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17513700554886387790noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5381920469339160660.post-8441866358127141592012-01-26T21:19:00.000-06:002012-01-26T21:19:46.028-06:00O.M.G.I joined the Rec Center. NEVER in my life did I expect to be putting all of those words, in that order, in the same sentence. I'm doing something called "The Lunch Crunch". It's a series of 45 second workouts with a jog (HA!) around the gym in between. Sometimes it's killer. Sometimes it's not so bad. The only bad thing is the time of day. I sweat and my hair goes flat. Ugh. The good part? It's a small group, so sometimes it's like having a personal trainer. Love that. Right now I suck. I'm so disappointed that I've lost everything I had when I was kickboxing. But like I told the instructor - I want to get that back. I want to be that strong again. I can do this.Kidlibhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17513700554886387790noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5381920469339160660.post-52826226904129440122012-01-19T21:23:00.000-06:002012-01-19T21:23:13.863-06:00My Two Favorite Garfield (Jim Davis cartoon) the Cat Posters"I'm not overweight, I'm undertall."
Sight unseen. I'd say I got pretty dang lucky. It's HUGE and I love it! Not the frasier fir I had picked out (and couldn't afford), but very happy with it, just the same.
Here are a few decorative highlights.
I've found that people take a lot of pictures of flowers. I feel like a traitor to my gender for admitting this, but I'm not into flowers. At all. I don't own any floral print clothing. There is nothing floral or plant-like in my home. THere are no flowers in my yard. The last time my husband bought me flowers, I got mad at him.

I'm not into angels or butterflies either.

Well, there you have it. One of the random posts I promised in the previous post.Kidlibhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17513700554886387790noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5381920469339160660.post-11762428631750394372012-01-13T20:50:00.002-06:002012-01-13T20:55:40.393-06:00New Year - New PlanWhen I started this blog, I wanted it to be a place for me to show what I'd made. I thought it should have "quality" posts. Posts with "substance". But that quickly became a chore. I thougnt I always needed a photo to coordinatewith me content.

But now it's a new year and I have a new plan. If you haven't given up on following me, thanks. I've decided that my random thoughts want a place to be heard. So, sometimes there will be crafty posts and someday there will be posts like the one I'm about to post with a different heading.

Whatever the case, stay with me, and leave comments. I love comments. Even the negative ones.

As for the current background, I'll try to get that changed. Soon. I also have Christmas pictures I want to post.

Thanks for your support. - SusanKidlibhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17513700554886387790noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5381920469339160660.post-25136148203494105872011-08-27T17:24:00.010-05:002011-08-27T17:48:30.175-05:00New Challenge Cards for OutlawzThese card challenges are good for me. If nothing else, it makes me go out to the studio and do something. So far, I think the challenges have been easy. And ususally, as long as I'm out there, I make two or three more things as well. I'm in the mood to do a mini-album or decorated a set of boxes or something. Halloween is just around the corner, so maybe I'll turn my attention to that collection of materials. Having them all together makes that easy to do. Anyway, here are some cards that I've done for the Outlawz challenges lately. (By the way, I was chosen as one of the July winners! I am supposed to receive a paper pack, but haven't yet. Before you congratulate me on my win, I should probably mention it was a random drawing. (snicker)
The top two cards were "lifted" from back issues of Paper Crafts magazine. The wings on the owl were made using layers of scalloped strips with the edges curled up slightly for dimention. The bottom right was a transparency and color challenge. There is a sympathy message on the transparency. The goofy penguin was a challenge requiring the use of a bird. {He looked cuter in my mind!}

I'm starting you out slow and easy. This time the challenge is to use a pull tab. There are more out there than just on pop and beer cans. Dole has a big blue one on cans of pineapple. Some of the energy drinks have colored ones, too. Very cool.

These gals are amazing!! They are primarily stampers, which is going to force me to get out the stamps and make use of them again. But these gals are "coloring" experts!! I'm telling you, the images they create are amazing! You've got to check them out!! Better yet, JOIN in the fun!!

They think of me when they see things that are vintage (a.k.a. OLD) and bring them to me. I'm also, occasionally lucky, at finding such treasures on my own. Here are the latest three beauties in my collections. Not only are the contacts in tact and in perfect condition, but they have boxes that show very little wear. They have all made a home in The Paper Studio and I will use their contents cautiously. Some of you will read this and think, "She's crazy." Some of you will read this and think, "Dang! I'd love to have that!" And some of you will just roll your eyes and move on. I'm okay with that. Really. The Math Flash Cards and the Memory game are both from 1966!!! How weird/wacky/wonderful is that?!

Instead, I'm going to push some of you to your creative limits by hosting an EMBELLILSHMENT CHALLENGE! You may submit a CARD or a TAG. Oooooooooo!!! I hope you're as excited as I am. I'm not sure if you can send me an image through blogger, but I'll see what I can find out about that. (Suggestions welcome!)

Anyway, there is a little time left this month, so I'm going to go ahead and tell you what the embellishment for July is. A PAPER CLIP! See what you can do! You've got until the end of the month.

I will try to post each month's embellishment close to the beginning of each month so you have plenty of time to make your card. Some of these projects I am more impressed with than others. The banners, for example, have been on my desk for months. Seriously. Remember when banners first started showing up in the trade magazines? That's when I started these. They've been sitting on my desk, just waiting for a little "something" to finish the look. I don't like the letters that I cut freehand (for some reason!) for the "create" banner. My good friend, Tami, sent me the directions after finding them on the internet. I made one out of a Monopoly board, too, but it was a disaster. The board was too heavy and it just didn't go together very well. I glued a game piece to the front for part of the closure, but I haven't figured out the half of it yet. Suggestions welcome.

Kidlibhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17513700554886387790noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5381920469339160660.post-21751921224130167512011-06-25T22:03:00.002-05:002011-06-25T22:06:21.509-05:00New Cards Coming Soon! Now that I am off work, I have finally gotten around to doing some paper crafting. I have finished a couple of projects that I started sometime ago. I've also been doing lots of thank you cards. I hope to get them posted in a day or two. Here's a teaser --- some of them feature a bra!! There, that ought to get you to come back and visit! hahaha!Kidlibhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17513700554886387790noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5381920469339160660.post-28900307956534640892011-06-25T21:54:00.003-05:002011-06-25T22:03:13.754-05:00Camping SoapboxLet me be straight up about something. I don't camp. It's not that I wouldn't, but I just don't. If I were to camp, it'd be in a tent. I have a tent, by thet way, and I have used it. Anyway. I don't understand the "camper people". Why would you buy an expensive camper that you have to tow/drive somewhere, pay for your space and hook-ups, then do the same things you do at home? I have nothing against the conviences of having at camper - they are awesome! (Talk about maximizing a tiny space! Wow!!) Seriously. Why do campers have tv's? Why would you eat microwave popcorn while camping? Roasting hot dogs, making s'mores and banana boats, egg in a hole for breakfast, popcorn over the fire..... Raining? Play cards, tell stories, blow bubble, play board games, work on word puzzles.....

Probably a good thing I don't camp or have children. They would consider themselves "deprived" , compared to their friends.

Okay, I'm done now. Thank you for letting me get that off my chest.Kidlibhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17513700554886387790noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5381920469339160660.post-67728332262137053762011-06-25T21:41:00.002-05:002011-06-25T21:45:54.626-05:00CARD COLOR CHALLENGE!If any of you followed along last April 2010 - April 2011, you know that my friend, Tami, and I had the challenge to send one another a handmade card every week for a year. We did it! It was the most fun!! Anyway, she told me the next challenge was my choice. Sooooo, I'm thinking about doing something with colors and/or embellishments. I will post the details as soon as I get them worked out. But instead of just asking Tami to participate, I'm inviting all of you!! That's right! Anyone who reads this blog will be able to participate. Check back soon for the details!!!Kidlibhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17513700554886387790noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5381920469339160660.post-25622459984211233762011-05-01T20:14:00.013-05:002011-05-01T20:48:12.720-05:00New Cards!!

Yes, Card People, I am still making cards. As you can see, this being my third post of the evening, I'm a little behind!!! Anywho, I give you a congratulations on the baby girl card, a Harley-themed wedding card, and an "anniversary" card for a special friend. In late March 2010, my friend Tami asked if I'd be up for a card making challenge. The challenge? Send one handmade card a week to one another for one year. That's 52 cards. I mailed my first card on April 5, 2010. To commemorate the passing of a very creative year, I created an "anniversary" card. If you've got a card making friend, I strongly advise you to take on this challenge!! It was sooooo much fun!! We tried all different techniques and even sent the ugly ones and the "this is not the card I had pictured in my head" ones. Try it!! I'd be willing to do it again, if anyone is interested! Just remember, it's a serious committment!!!!

This weekend, my friend Cassie and her new husband, threw themselves a wedding reception with a bit of a Harley theme. While packing the "Long Distance Ride Survival Kit" gift that I put together for them, my gift bag ripped. No worries, I thought, I'll just pick up another black or orange bag at Walmart. Except that Walmart didn't have either. Not happy with a wrapped box or another colored bag, I headed back to the fabric department. What are the chances of me finding some kind of Harley/motorcycle fabric here, I wondered. Just then the fabric dept. gal rounded the corner with some bolts to put away with THE PERFECT fabric on the top of her stack!! YOWZA!!! Did this do the trick, or what!? I sewed it up, added a drawstring, and stuffed it with all the goodies. I know it's going to be late, but I think it's worth it!

Kidlibhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17513700554886387790noreply@blogger.com1
